SRA: Students Rising Above

Students Rising Above!

“Success through Education.” This organization’s mission is to “Fulfill Dreams” and it does.

Here is the mission statement I found on their site:

The SRA Community is dedicated to impacting the future through the cultivation of extraordinary youth. Students Rising Above invests in low-income, first generation college students who have demonstrated a deep commitment to education and strength of character in overcoming tremendous odds of poverty, homelessness, and neglect.  We help each student to realize his or her potential by guiding and supporting them through college graduation, and into the workforce.

SRA realizes that access to college is not enough! They also help guide students throughout college.

One of the main requirements to be admitted as a Student Rising Above is to be a high school junior and be from the Bay Area. See the rest of the requirements here: http://studentsrisingabove.org/sra-scholars-program/eligibility

The deadline is in the Spring (Due April 2014) so why am I writing about it now?

One of the application requirements is a letter of recommendation.

Think about a teacher that knows your strengths and knows your story. Do you have one in mind? Start reaching out to teachers and stop by their office hours to talk. Building a connection with them is one of the most important things to do before applying to colleges. They have a lot of power/control if you think about it. They ultimately control your grades and have a huge say when it comes to referrals. Build that trust. They may be sitting at your college graduation some day and you bet they will be proud.

Make sure to keep this program on your radar!
