Management Leadership for Tomorrow Seminar 2: Minnesota

(This is my 2nd MLT Seminar. Refer to the first one earlier in this blog)

Last weekend I was very fortunate to attend a seminar through the MLT program in Minnesota.
I hopped on a plane from LAX to MSP and what a difference it was! As soon as I left the terminal, I ran to the nearest shuttle bus I could find in order to escape the 9 degree frost attacking my Los Angeles body.

Target hosted this weekend seminar full of workshops on: Interviewing Correctly, Managing the Recruitment Process & Establishing One’s Brands.

I will go more in depth on the lessons in future posts.

MLT fellows were invited to Target HQ for an interview “Superday” (full day of interviewing). Firms interviewing included: Google, Citi, Wells Fargo, Disney, Clorox, AND TARGET of course!

The environment was extremely collaborative as we “high-fived” each other before going into our interviews. I have never seen so many suits before and I was proud to see motivated & smart people of color.

Hopefully the next time I see the fellows, we will all have internships. Good luck to everyone on the recruitment process. MLT Ambassadors may be coming to your colleges soon to recruit the next class of MLT fellows. Amazing coaching, amazing opportunities and amazing results. These are the next leaders.

Goldenrule#1: Mentor vs. Sponsor

Write this on your “to-do” list.

–Find a Mentor and a Sponsor.

What’s the difference?

Mentor: A mentor is someone that you trust and challenges you. They care about your career and are involved in some or most of your career impacting/life decisions! Your mentor sheds light on new opportunities for you and serves as a guide.

Sponsor: A sponsor cares more about your brand within the firm. They should be very influential in the workplace and can recommend you for positions you want.

A mentor can be anyone! They need to be someone who you can tell “the good, the bad, and the ugly.” While a sponsor is strictly professional so start looking towards partners or managers at your job.

Finding your mentor and sponsor is crucial to your success. Once you reach your goals and are at great place during your career, think about becoming someone else’s mentor or sponsor. Keep the cycle of opportunities flowing!

The Consortium

Ever thought about getting your MBA but you were discouraged about the costs that came along with it? Apply for a fellowship from THE CONSORTIUM!

Early application deadline is October 15th! Follow this link to see what the application entails: http://www.cgsm.org/students/prospective-students/application-instructions/

You may not be able to complete the requirements this time around, but you can check it out again next year. Now you will have a head start. It is such a great fellowship to win.

The mission statement is long but it is worth a read:

“The mission of The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, an alliance of leading American business schools and some of our country’s top corporations, is to enhance diversity in business education and leadership by helping to reduce the serious underrepresentation of African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans in both our member schools’ enrollments and the ranks of management. We will achieve this mission by recruiting for graduate business education qualified U.S. citizens and U.S permanent residents who can demonstrate a commitment to The Consortium’s mission and can best assist The Consortium in pursuing this mission.”
The Consortium also has great member schools including: The Haas School of Business, The Tuck School of Business, UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, Yale School of Management and more!

Here is what you can get as a Consortium Fellow:

Become a Toigo Fellow!

Today I will be writing about the Toigo MBA Fellowship.

Here is a small blurb I grabbed from their site:

The Toigo MBA Fellowship provides minority MBA candidates committed to careers in finance with an unmatched network of contacts, a prestigious point of difference in the eyes of employers, one-on-one career guidance, leadership training, a merit award—and more.

There are so many benefits from becoming a fellow. Read up on them here: http://www.toigofoundation.org/Toigo-Fellowship

Another aspect of the program that caught my attention was their MBA campuses where the Toigo fellows attend & enroll.

Check them out here: http://www.toigofoundation.org/MBA-Campuses

Amazing opportunity for those thinking about acquiring a MBA. Remember that many firms require a MBA for mobility within the firm and with so much competition out there, this Master degree really opens doors for you.

Have a good day!

The Fulbright Programs

Hey Everyone,

I found about this opportunity this year and they are accepting applications. Act fast because the deadline is October 15th 2013! Here is the description I found on their website: Fulbrighters will meet, work, live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences.  The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in routine tasks, allowing the grantee to gain an appreciation of others’ viewpoints and beliefs, the way they do things, and the way they think. Through engagement in the community, the individual will interact with their hosts on a one-to-one basis in an atmosphere of openness, academic integrity, and intellectual freedom, thereby promoting mutual understanding.

They have different types of grants to apply for. To check these out, visit http://us.fulbrightonline.org/types-of-grants

My friend received a Business Fulbright which includes a full ride scholarship to study in Mexico City and work for an amazing Consulting company. The Fulbright program has multiple opportunities for U.S. students & Non-U.S. students.

Check out http://www.iie.org/Fulbright to see the other programs.

I hope all of this helps! If I can make an impact on one person, and they can make an impact on another person, who knows how many doors we can open!
